The Rescue Boat

Prologue

1November 1998, the Black Sea. Late afternoon, the Ramelis leaves the harbor. You are at the helm; a short night trip of a few hours.
2There are six of you on deck: old Rıza, forty years on this sea; Elif, out at sea for the first time, and her nine-year-old son Emre; the deckhands Kadir and Murat.
3At midnight the storm hits out of nowhere. Waves pound the bow; you can barely hold the wheel.
4A fire breaks out in the engine room and the boat is taking on water. The radio crackles: "The Coast Guard is on its way — we can't reach you before dawn." The water is ice-cold; no one lasts more than an hour in it.

Your choices

5There is a single inflatable raft, built for four. Old Rıza shakes his head: "Put a fifth person in and the first wave flips it. And don't forget, son — the captain is the last to leave the ship." There are six of you; two will stay on board. You have a few minutes.

How do you first take control of the crisis?
