What Is Digital Legacy?
Not closing your account after you die isn't the same as leaving a legacy.

When we hear "digital legacy," we usually think of the same things: your Instagram account, your email archive, your cloud photos. What happens to these accounts after someone dies is a real and practical problem — but it doesn't carry the actual weight of the word "legacy."
A legacy is something its owner leaves knowingly and intentionally. But almost all of our digital footprint accumulates by accident. An email you never deleted, an account you never closed, an archived conversation — none of these say "I left this for you." They're just there, because no one thought to delete them.
The difference between a footprint and a legacy
A footprint is passive: it's left behind. A legacy is active: it's given knowingly. A photo album is a footprint — it shows the moments you were there. But it doesn't ask you "what were you thinking in that moment, why were you there, what did you learn from that day." If the answers to these questions were never written down, they disappear with you.
An account staying open isn't the same as someone's voice continuing to be heard.
That was the question we asked while designing Ramelis: what's the difference between "handing over an account" and "leaving something behind to truly be understood"? The answer led us to the idea of consent and selectivity.
